Institute 193: Volume One is a publication featuring the work of 18 artists who have held solo exhibitions at Institute 193 since it was founded in 2009.

Institute 193 produces exhibitions, publications, and other projects that document the cultural landscape of the modern South, with a particular emphasis on the work of artists from Kentucky. These artists work in a remarkable variety of media; this publication includes drawing, photography, painting, assemblage, installation, and sculpture.

The title of the publication refers to the distinct physical space of Institute 193’s original gallery space located in Lexington, Kentucky. This book highlights the first three years of exhibitions and projects at Institute 193, featuring color plates of each artist’s work and short essays about each artist’s practice.
